News and Views from Ascent Wealth Management

Welcome to another News and Views.  March has brought a continuation of global growth in the midst of a continuation of the low cash rates.  This is good news for most super funds and those of us who still have debt.  It is a wake up call to those who are continuing to hold large proportions of cash and term deposits.  Discussions about the safest way to re- enter the market should be the order of the day for those that know people in this predicament; as always we are happy to help.

This month, we commence with our customary economic and market update with MLC Investment Strategist, Brian Parker.  Brian's key message is to not go full throttle into the markets, there is a need for caution.  We should nonethless enjoy the times we are currently living in.  Next Jim Parker from Dimensional Fund Advisers posits the similarities that the Masterchef juggernaut has to portfolio construction.  Combining investments has all the challenge that creating the winning receipe on a TV cooking show; patience, research and above all discipline to "stick to the plan" when things turn pear- shaped in the kitchen- I don't think I'll look at Matt Preston and his colleagues in the same way again!

Empty Nesters will usually have overflowing bucket lists after largely being relieved of the duties of looking after family.  Our next article postions that there are some financial considerations to factor into the planning, in order to maximise your position.  We'll be there to assist as the time passes and retirement starts to beckon.

One of our investment options is to invest in property.   Many of us already have a significant personal property asset, so putting further money into this asset class is something that bears some careful consideration.  Where the motivation and circumstances are right, property can provide effective diversification to your other growth investments.  Our next article provides some hints and tips.

We also look at the proposition that many are taking up in retirement, living overseas.  There is a lot to consider, the economic conditions and legislative environment of buying property, as well as the impact of being so far away from families.  It is a big decision!

Lastly, many of you will be aware that I am again riding in the MS Brissie to the Bay Bike ride in June.  This will be the 6th year that my family and I have taken to the streets in Brisbane East to support this worthwhile cause.  We are really looking forward to doing it all again.  Thanks to all those that have sponsored me already; your support means a lot, and I am aware that your funds will be used wisely to support those living with this very challenging condition.  If you would like to manke a donation, you can easily do so by following the link below ;

Thank you for your continuing support, and we'll catch up again next month !

March Economic Update

In the latest update, Brian reviews events in markets during February.

He discusses:

  • how world share markets rose over the month, supported by central bank policies of keeping interest rates very low
  • how Greece’s agreement with European authorities to extend its bailout deal boosted the Greek share market
  • why it’s unclear whether business investment in Australia’s non-mining economy can take up the slack from declining mining investment, and
  • how MLC’s multi-asset portfolios are positioned.
